MEDICAL STATEMENT

The Need for a Medical Health Statement Before Diving

The underwater environment places unique demands on your body. Pressure differences, breathing compressed air, and the physical exertion of swimming can all impact your well-being. To dive safely, it is essential that you are physically capable of handling these conditions. The dive medical health statement is purely intended to guarantee your safety.

What Risks Do We Rule Out?

Some conditions that are not a problem on land can become dangerous underwater. Due to the pressure and the environment, extra caution is necessary:

  • Ear and Sinus Problems: If you cannot equalize properly due to a cold, allergies, or inflammation, this can lead to serious damage to your eardrum or sinuses due to pressure differences.

  • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Conditions: Conditions such as severe asthma or certain heart problems can significantly increase the risk of a lung overexpansion injury or decompression sickness. The exertion of diving demands more from your lungs and heart.

  • Other Risks: Recent surgeries, the use of certain medication, or neurological problems may require a medical evaluation to ensure you do not become disoriented or suffer a black-out underwater.

Completing the Medical Statement: The 'Yes/No' Questionnaire

For all diving activities— from a guided fun dive and Try Scuba Diving to SSI Courses and specialties a careful self-evaluation is required using a medical questionnaire. It is crucial that you answer all questions truthfully and accurately.

The Steps

  1. Start via SSI: You can create an account yourself on the SSI website and fill out the medical questionnaire there.

  2. All 'No's'? If you can answer all questions with 'No,' you are medically fit to dive. You do not need to take any further action. The digital statement will be stored directly in your SSI account.

  3. One or More 'Yes's'? If you have answered 'Yes' to one or more questions, you must print the form and schedule a medical examination for diving with a doctor (preferably a dive doctor). The medical certificate for diving you receive there is your official medical clearance.

Please note: A personal SSI account is required for anyone who dives with us.

What to Do with a 'Yes' Answer? (Medical Examination)

If you have answered 'Yes' to one or more questions, an examination by a specialized doctor is the next essential step:

1. Arrange Your Examination Before Your Holiday

We strongly advise you to arrange the examination before your trip in your home country with a Sports Dive Doctor or a physician specialized in Hyperbaric Medicine. This prevents uncertainty and extra costs during your holiday.

2. Obtain Medical Clearance

The doctor will review the specific 'Yes' answer and determine whether your condition is compatible with the sport of diving. If you receive medical clearance ('fit-to-dive' statement), you are ready to dive! The statement is usually valid for one year (a shorter period may apply to divers over 45).

3. Upload the Documentation

You can then easily upload the documentation from the doctor to your personal SSI account. This allows us to review the clearance and ensures you can start diving worry-free.

Cancellation Policy

If you cannot provide a doctor's certificate when required, we will attempt to reschedule your appointment. If rescheduling is not possible due to scheduling, or if you decide not to arrange a certificate, the full cost of your booking will be charged. Therefore, always arrange this in advance!
